Australia named rookie spin bowler Jon Holland for its seven-match one-day cricket tour of India starting later this month. Aussies still are without their regular vice-captain Michael Clarke and wicket-keeper Brad Haddin along with Callum Ferguson and Nathan Bracken because of injury. Holland, 22, a left-arm orthodox spinner, was promoted to the national squad after impressing in recent games for Australia’s second-string team, Cricket Australia said. “Jon Holland is in the squad as we wanted to take the opportunity to give a young left arm finger spinner exposure both to the Australian team set-up and Indian conditions,” NSP Chairman, Andrew Hilditch said. Clarke still nursing a back injury as Australia appointed Michael Hussey as the vice-captain of its 15-man squad whereas wicket-keeper Haddin is recovering from a finger surgery. “We do have four players unavailable for this tour due to injury. Michael Clarke is continuing his rehabilitation from back soreness and Mike Hussey will be the vice captain for this tour. Brad Haddin continues his rehabilitation from finger surgery, following the injury he picked up during the Ashes series, and Tim Paine, following a fine ICC Champions Trophy, is selected as wicket keeper,” Hilditch said. |

Mark Ramprakash stands up for Monty Panesar and insists England don't know how to treat the spin star
By Lawrence Booth Mark Ramprakash has accused England of mistreating Monty Panesar, saying the national side does not understand spin bowling. And he has hit out at the national side’s cosy ‘In Club’ he claims has closed the door on more worthy candidates. The broadside comes at a time when the selectors are considering leaving Panesar out of the tour to South Africa. But Ramprakash believes the left-arm spinner, who was dropped by England after helping to save the first Ashes Test in Cardiff with the bat, deserves better after taking 126 wickets in 39 Tests. ‘Monty has eight five-wicket hauls in Test cricket and he has won Test matches for England, yet all I seem to hear is what Monty can’t do,’ Ramprakash said. ‘I don’t believe other players get treated that way. There is a lack of understanding of spin bowling. ‘This was reinforced when Adil Rashid performed so well in the first one-day game against Australia but was left out of the following matches. |

SYDNEY - Former Australian spin legend Shane Warne’s cousin Michael Warne is all set to enter the Australian cricketing world and carry forward the legendary Warne dynasty. The 22-year-old, who is also a leg spinner like his famous cousin, will likely appear at the upper end of Melbourne club cricket this summer, playing most likely second grade for St Kilda, News.com.au reports. Michael has spent a season in the UK, and many cricketers believe that he can create a name of his own. He had also taken 27 wickets at an average of under 14 runs for the Saints, including 5-27 in his sole second-grade match. (ANI) |

Graeme Swann ripped through Australia's middle and lower order as England gave themselves a chance of avoiding a 7-0 NatWest Series whitewash at the Riverside. The spinner claimed the prized wicket of skipper Ricky Ponting for 53 and then snapped up Cameron White, James Hopes, Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee to return career-best figures of five for 28 as the tourists laboured to 176 off just 45.5 overs. Ponting had earlier eased himself past Inzamam-ul-Haq into third place in the all-time list of one-day international batsmen, eventually taking his tally to 11,760. England, bidding to avoid the humiliation of a 7-0 series defeat, started in promising fashion as James Anderson removed opener Shane Watson for nought in his first over and Graham Onions, making his ODI debut, prompted Tim Paine to nudge a ball to wicketkeeper Matt Prior. Ponting and Michael Clarke steadied the ship with a partnership of 79 for the third wicket, the latter pushing the score past 50 with his first boundary 43 minutes and 31 balls into his innings. The Australia captain reached his own personal landmark during the following over, clipping Tim Bresnan to the fine leg boundary to pass Inzamam's mark. |
